Youth Humanitarian Film Production Guides

For Students and Student Organizations

Global Youth Philanthropy (GYP)’s Youth Humanitarian Film Project invites young people from around the world to share impactful stories that inspire empathy, action, and cross-cultural understanding. Whether you’re an individual student or part of a school club or youth organization, you can participate by taking on all or part of the filmmaking process.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

🧠 1. Identify the Central Theme and Underlying Stories

Start by asking:

  • What humanitarian issue matters most to you or your community?
  • What stories are hidden in plain sight that deserve to be heard?
  • How can your film inspire understanding or change?

Your central theme could align with GYP’s focus areas such as:

  • Youth in Humanitarian Action
  • Refugee and Migrant Experiences
  • Climate and Environmental Justice
  • Mental Health in Crisis
  • Bridging Cultures Through Collaboration

Tip: Make it personal and local when possible. Real voices have the strongest impact.

✍️ 2. Write the Film Script

A compelling short film usually begins with a clear and focused script. Your script can include:

  • Narration or voiceover
  • Interview questions and answers
  • Dialogue or storytelling
  • Visual description (scenes, images, clips)

Tip: Even if your film is mostly visual, having a written plan helps with organization and timing.

📸 3. Produce Video, Take Photos, and Collect Materials

Now it’s time to gather your content. This could include:

  • Original footage (interviews, action shots, daily life)
  • Photos (taken by you or with permission from others)
  • Archival footage (be sure it’s in the public domain or licensed)
  • Audio recordings (including background music or sound effects)

Tip: Make sure all materials are high-quality and respectful of the people and cultures being represented.

🎨 4. Creative Video Editing

Use video editing software (like iMovie, CapCut, Adobe Premiere, or DaVinci Resolve) to assemble your materials into a short film—usually between 2 to 10 minutes.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Pace your film well (don’t rush or drag)
  • Use subtitles or captions if your audio isn’t clear
  • Make your message and emotion shine through visuals, music, and transitions

Tip: Collaborate! Editing can be fun and powerful when done as a group.

⚖️ 5. Understand and Apply Copyright Rules

To avoid copyright issues:

  • Use royalty-free or original music and sound
  • Don’t use images or video clips without permission
  • Credit all sources and collaborators properly

Tip: GYP can help review your content if you’re unsure about rights—just reach out!

📬 Ready to Join?

Students can submit films as individuals or groups. If your team only wants to participate in one stage (e.g., editing or research), that’s fine too! You can collaborate with other GYP students worldwide.
